Ode to ultraviolence and the undead?

May 31, 2009

What is it with Beethoven being used in really twisted ways in movies?

This morning I woke up in my friends apartment under this poster:

If you’ve seen the movie, you understand the use of his music.  If you haven’t, I wouldn’t want to ruin it.  You really should see the movie, unless you have a really weak stomach.

Now I’m watching George A Romero’s Day of the Dead, which features a zombie named Bub who is being used as a test subject in a science lab.  The Scientist at one point is testing what stimulates the zombie and puts head phones on Bub’s ears.  He wants to see if Bub will learn how to turn on the tape player on its own.  The music used…. Beethoven’s 9th Symphony.  The zombie’s expression is definitely delight over hearing the music.

What is it with this music?  Is it just the title “Ode to Joy” that excites these filmakers?
