Lying about liking Beethoven boosts SAT scores

March 4, 2009

This has been floating around the Internet for a few days.  If you have time, read the comments.  I find them absolutely hilarious.

Apparently people who do well on the SATs listen to Beethoven.  I’m not going to get into the whole Beethoven making you smarter bit.  Instead, I wonder how many of those people are musically literate (as in understand what is going on in the music and/or can play it), and how many of them chose to listen to Beethoven because that’s the image of themselves they wanted to develop.

The idea that classical music is for elites can be considered a stigma, for sure, but at the same time, its built a core audience of suckers that will listen to the music just because they think they need to if they want to look smart and sophisticated.  I bet I’d have a lot more fun at orchestra concerts if everyone who was there to actually listen to the music kicked out all of the people who just wanted to be there or counteract some guilt for not being a good elitist.
